MLS NEXT Pro is entering a new era.
The professional development league announced a major change to its competition calendar, with a transitional 2027 Sprint Season set to begin in February before the league officially moves to its first Summer-to-Spring season in 2027-28.
The shift could have significant implications across the American soccer landscape, including for regional clubs such as Atlanta United 2 and Chattanooga FC, as MLS NEXT Pro continues to strengthen the pathway connecting academy soccer, the professional development level and the first team.
Beginning in 2027-28, all three levels of the MLS player pathway — MLS NEXT, MLS NEXT Pro and Major League Soccer — will operate on the same calendar.

A Transitional Sprint Season Opens the Door in 2027
Before the new calendar fully takes effect, MLS NEXT Pro will hold a Sprint Season from February through May 2027.
The abbreviated campaign will still carry the significance of a traditional season. Every club will play 14 regular-season matches, with the schedule running from mid-February through late April. Four rounds of playoffs will follow, culminating with MLS NEXT Pro Cup in late May.
The Sprint Season is designed to bridge the gap between the league’s current schedule and the new summer-to-spring format.
For clubs like Atlanta United 2, the transition represents another change in an evolving developmental environment. The 2s have continued to serve as a critical bridge between the Atlanta United Academy and the First Team, giving young players opportunities to test themselves against professional competition.
The calendar alignment could make that movement through the system even more seamless.
MLS NEXT Pro Moves to a Summer-to-Spring Calendar
The first full Summer-to-Spring season will begin in July 2027 and conclude in June 2028.
Under the new format, each club will play 28 regular-season matches. The first half of the campaign will run from mid-July through mid-December before a winter break. Teams will return in early February for the second half of the season, which will run through early May.
The playoffs will then determine the league champion, with MLS NEXT Pro Cup scheduled for early June.
The move brings MLS NEXT Pro closer to the calendar traditionally used by many of the world’s top soccer leagues while also creating greater continuity throughout the MLS development structure.
What the Calendar Shift Means for the Player Pathway
Perhaps the most important part of the announcement is the alignment of the entire MLS player pathway.
Starting with the 2027-28 season, MLS NEXT, MLS NEXT Pro and MLS will share the same competition calendar. League officials believe that continuity will create additional opportunities for player movement and development between each level.
The numbers already demonstrate the role MLS NEXT Pro has played since launching in 2022:
- More than 1,000 MLS players have been loaned to MLS NEXT Pro.
- 270 MLS NEXT Pro players have signed MLS First Team contracts.
- More than 1,300 MLS NEXT Academy players have competed in MLS NEXT Pro.
For Atlanta United, a club that has consistently invested in its Academy and Homegrown pathway, the alignment could provide another tool for developing the next generation of 5-Stripes talent.
Players who are progressing through the Academy can potentially experience a more connected transition into Atlanta United 2 before competing for opportunities with the First Team.

The calendar change will affect every club in MLS NEXT Pro, including Atlanta United 2 and independent side Chattanooga FC.
For Chattanooga, the transition comes as the club continues to establish itself as one of the league’s independent voices while building a professional pathway in the region. The Boys in Blue have demonstrated that they can compete near the top of the MLS NEXT Pro table, and the new format will introduce another layer of strategic planning around roster building, player development and the rhythm of the season.
Atlanta United 2, meanwhile, will continue to operate as an essential part of the 5-Stripes’ development pipeline. The new calendar alignment could make it easier for clubs to manage player movement across their Academy, MLS NEXT Pro and First Team rosters throughout the year.
The change also arrives during a period of continued growth for the league. MLS NEXT Pro is celebrating its fifth season in 2026 with 30 teams and is expected to welcome additional clubs in the coming years.
For teams across the Southeast and beyond, the calendar is changing. But the mission remains the same: develop players, create opportunities and continue building the next generation of professional soccer.
