B.J., Calaghan the assistant coach of the United States men’s national team, has joined Nashville SC. On Wednesday, the MLS team announced that Callaghan will take over as manager. On July 22, Callaghan, 43, will formally become a member of the team ahead of Nashville’s Leagues Cup matchup with Mazatlán F.C. 31 July.
Following the USMNT’s elimination from the Copa América, Callaghan is the second assistant to leave the team; goalkeeping coach Fabian Otte has joined Liverpool. Under American manager Gregg Berhalter, Callaghan served as an assistant coach for the previous five years. In addition, he managed the squad in an acting capacity until June 2023, when Berhalter was brought back by the USSF.
He managed a mostly reserve squad to the 2023 Gold Cup semifinals and the USMNT to the 2023 Concacaf Nations League title during his tenure as coach. Although the Gold Cup loss to Panama on penalties shootouts is legally a draw, he had a 4-0–3 record while in command.
When Berhalter was hired again, he went back to being an assistant coach. “Taking the head coach position at Nashville SC is an incredible opportunity and an exciting next step in my career,” Callaghan stated.
“I would want to express my sincere gratitude to Gregg Berhalter for all of his guidance and assistance during my tenure on the U.S. Men’s National Team. “This experience has been priceless, and I’m incredibly grateful for the friendships and experiences I’ve created along the road.
