Head coach Tracey Kevins of the U.S. Under-20 Women’s Youth National Team has selected a 24-man roster for the team’s training camp in Athens, Georgia, which will feature two international games versus Mexico.
The camp is scheduled to run from July 8–16. This will be the last U.S. training camp. U-20s before Kevins selects a 21-player squad to compete for the United States in the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, which will be place in four locations in Colombia from August 31 to September 22.
The USA will play Spain, the defending FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup champions, in the tournament’s opening match on Sunday, September 1. Morocco will play them on Wednesday, September 4, and Paraguay will play them again on Saturday, September 7, to complete the group stage.
The U.S. will play its third group game at El Techo Stadium in the Colombian capital of Bogotá, after playing its first and second games at Pascual Guerrero Stadium in Cali, Colombia. This will be the 11th FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup overall and the first with 24 participating countries. At this age range, the USA has participated in every FIFA competition.
The USA will play fellow U-20 WWC qualifier Mexico twice during the training camp in Athens, Georgia. Both games will take place at the Jack Turner Soccer Complex on the University of Georgia campus.
The two games between the teams—which are scheduled for Saturday, July 13, and Tuesday, July 16—will begin at 6:30 p.m. ET. The public is welcome to watch the matches. Players can compete in the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup if they were born on January 1, 2004, or later. Kevins chose 14 athletes born in 2004, 5 born in 2005, and 5 born in 2006 for this journey.
The roster for the training camp, which will be held during the FIFA international break, consists of three young club players, fourteen college players, and seven professional players
The seven current pros are all in their rookie seasons in the NWSL: Riley Jackson (North Carolina Courage), Ally Lemos (Orlando Pride) and Claire Hutton (Kansas City Current) in midfield; Emeri Adames (Seattle Reign FC) and Ally Sentnor (Utah Royals) in forward positions. The defenders Savy King (Bay FC) and Gisele Thompson (Angel City FC) are also in their rookie seasons. This season, everyone has visited the field. Sentnor, Hutton, and King have all played substantial minutes, while Adames and Sentnor have each scored goals for their respective teams.
The U.S. U-20 WYNT has participated in six international matches so far this year. During that trip, they defeated Canada 3-1 in Germany, drew 0-0 in Germany, defeated Colombia in two games by a score of 1-0 in February, and won and lost 3-0 and 4-2, respectively, against Korea Republic on May 31 and June 3 in Los Angeles.
