ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Paris Saint-Germain is very serious about acquiring the services of Argentine soccer superstar Lionel Messi after the latter’s supposed new five-year deal with FC Barcelona fell.
According to reports, Messi has decided to leave Barca after it was learned that his long-time team could not accommodate his new contract due to economic problems.
With the news of Messi officially leaving Barca becomes finally, SG reached out to Messi on Thursday.
Sources said PSG sporting director Leonardo and chairman Nasser al Khelaifi are heavily involved in the discussions with Messi, having been in contact with his father Jorge for some time.
Analysts said if by chance PSG signs Messi into a contract it would increase the likelihood of Kylian Mbappe, who is out of contract next summer, signing a new long-term deal with the club.
It can be recalled that in agreeing to sign the new deal with FCB, Messi has also decided to cut his pay.
The 34-year-old’s previous contract, which was worth over €500 million ($594m) over four years, expired at the stroke of midnight on June 30.
After his contract expired many people speculated that Messi will decide to play somewhere else.
However, after careful thinking, Messi eventually decided to sign a new deal with Barca.
Aside from his desire to continue playing for FCB, one reason Messi decided to re-sign with the soccer club is due to the return of Joan Laporta as FC Barcelona president in March.
