The final score reads Chicago Fire 2 – Atlanta United 1, a result that leaves us still searching for that elusive away victory.
The match started evenly, but in the 14th minute, Chicago drew first blood from the penalty spot. A handball in the box by Alexey Miranchuk after a scramble saw Hugo Cuypers step up and convert.
Atlanta tried to respond, with Ronald Hernández and Brooks Lennon pushing down the wings, but Chicago looked more dangerous in the first half. Brad Guzan was called into action multiple times, including a fantastic save on a long-range effort from Sergio Oregel and a crucial block on Cuypers after a defensive lapse from a free kick.
Miranchuk had our best chance of the half in the 33rd minute, cutting inside the box for a shot that was saved by Chicago’s keeper, Jeffrey Gal. However, the early energy seemed to wane as halftime approached.
Coach Deila opted for no changes to start the second half, tweaking the formation slightly by pulling Miguel Almirón deeper to influence the midfield. Almirón had a couple of promising moments early in the half, including a left-footed shot wide and a determined run into the box where his shot deflected off a defender after a jersey pull. He followed up with a shot on the rebound that just missed the target.
In the 74th minute, Deila made a triple substitution, bringing on Saba Lobjanidze, Bartosz Slisz, and Tristan Muyumba for Hernández, Klich, and Fortune respectively. This saw Lennon shift to right-back and Saba take up a left-wing position.
The changes seemed to inject some life into the team, giving us more control in midfield and allowing us to press higher up the pitch. The breakthrough finally came in the 80th minute! Miranchuk whipped in a cross from the right, intended for Latte Lath, but Chicago defender Sam Rogers inadvertently headed it into his own net! That ended our away goal drought dating back to March 22nd!
Just as it felt like we were gaining momentum, Chicago struck again in the 86th minute. Rominigue Kouamé found space inside the box and slotted home a right-footed shot through a crowd of defenders.
Despite a late push, including a header off the post by Derrick Williams in stoppage time, we couldn’t find that equalizer.

Standout: Big credit to Brad Guzan, who made six crucial saves, preventing the scoreline from being even worse.
