Atlanta United’s new era officially begins with the arrival of Ronny Deila, who touched down at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground in early January to take the reins as head coach. Deila’s hiring, announced on December 20, has energized the club and its fanbase as the Norwegian manager begins his tenure with high expectations and a proven track record.
Deila brings a wealth of experience, having won six major trophies during his 17-year managerial career. His accolades include four league titles and two domestic cup victories, a testament to his ability to lead teams to success across various leagues and competitions. Notably, Deila guided New York City FC to the 2021 MLS Cup, where his side triumphed in a dramatic penalty shootout against the Portland Timbers.

During his introductory press conference, Deila expressed his eagerness to embrace the opportunity in Atlanta. Now on the ground, he’s begun building relationships with players and staff alike. “One of my strengths is that I’m good at working together with people,” Deila said. “My job is 60-70 percent leadership—being with people, building connections, and guiding them. The other 30-40 percent is football.”
