ATLANTA, GEORGIA—A pair of goals from their rookies helped the visiting Georgia State University Panthers beat the home team Presbyterian College 2-1 in exhibition soccer play on Wednesday night.
Graduate student Iolo Jones found the back of the net off an assist from freshman Bryan Silva to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers pushed the lead to 2-0 following a goal by freshman Ethan Sassine in the 60th minute.
The Blue Hose cut the deficit in half on a goal by senior midfielder Pedro Crespo in the 73rd minute but would get no closer as the Panthers improved to 1-0-1 in exhibition play this year.
The Panthers hoped to extend their winning streak to two when they host Clemson on Saturday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. at the new GSU Soccer Complex.
The regular season gets underway on Aug. 26 where the Panthers will host UNF.
Five of the Panthers’ next six games will be on the road with just a lone home date hosting UNC Asheville on Sept. 7. GSU will face road contests at Mercer (Aug. 29), USC Upstate (Sept. 4), Belmont (Sept. 10), Winthrop (Sept. 18), and Davidson (Sept. 21), before another home match with Wofford on Sept. 25.
Following a road game at UAB on Sept. 28, the Panthers will open conference play at Bowling Green on Oct. 7, followed by a road game at Akron on Oct. 9.
After the final non-conference match of the year hosting ETSU on Oct. 12, the Panthers will host Western Michigan on Oct. 21, and Northern Illinois on Oct. 23, in MAC action.
Georgia State will close out the road portion of the conference schedule at West Virginia on Oct. 28, before hosting in-state rival and conference foe Georgia Southern on Nov. 4.
The 2021 MAC Championship is scheduled for Nov. 10-13, at the home of the regular-season champion.
