In a surprising move, Atlanta United has parted ways with former USMNT captain Carlos Bocanegra, ending his tenure as the club’s technical director. Bocanegra, who joined Atlanta in 2015 ahead of their inaugural MLS season, leaves behind a legacy that includes an MLS Cup victory in 2018 and a U.S. Open Cup triumph in 2019.
Bocanegra’s journey from being a rock-solid defender with 110 caps for the U.S. Men’s National Team to leading Atlanta United’s technical operations has been nothing short of remarkable. As a player, he captained the USMNT in iconic tournaments such as the 2009 Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup. His leadership helped defeat Spain in 2009, and he brought invaluable experience to the 2010 World Cup clash against England.
