In a match that featured defensive mistakes, a red card, clinical finishes, and a league-leading striker executing at the absolute peak of his powers, Atlanta United 2 went toe-to-toe with Crown Legacy FC. The match ended in an explosive 3-3 draw at the end of 90 minutes, before a heartbreaking 4-3 extra-point penalty shootout defeat snatched away the bonus point.

Digging a Hole: The Shock Opening 15 Minutes
The match could not have started under tougher conditions for the boys in red and black. Crown Legacy came out with an aggressive tactical press and caught Atlanta completely cold on an early set piece.

While Mohamed Cisset managed to interrupt the initial pass, the loose deflection bounced straight to the chest of Nathan Richmond, who calmly rolled it home to put Crown Legacy back in front, 3-2.
Then came the match’s massive turning point just four minutes later. Cameron Dunbar intercepted a loose ball and sprinted out on a dangerous counter-attack. Desperate to halt the break, Neeley lunged in with a reckless, high trailing leg that caught Dunbar straight on the shin. The official marched over and immediately brandished a straight red card, reducing Crown Legacy to 10 men in the 58th minute.
Atlanta smelled blood and capitalized almost instantly. In the 60th minute, Dunbar spearheaded an overlapping sequence down the left wing before threading a line-breaking pass to Dominik Chong Qui. Charging into the box at a punishingly tight angle, Chong Qui unleashed a low, powerful left-footed laser that deflected off goalkeeper Lazar Kaličanin and rippled the back of the net to equalize once again at 3-3!
Despite a furious attack from the 5-Stripes against the shorthapped visitors over the final 30 minutes, Crown Legacy parked an absolute bus to defend the draw until the final whistle, sending the game straight into a penalty shootout for the extra standings point.
Heartbreak at the Spot
In the MLS NEXT Pro extra-point shootout, the margins are razor-thin. Both goalkeepers stepped up to save an initial attempt, keeping things deadlocked. While Kovac, Chong Qui, and Adrian Gill confidently converted their attempts, a crucial save against Andrew Jardines and a tough bounce off the crossbar from Santiago Pita spelled doom. Crown Legacy captured the shootout 4-3, taking the extra point back to Charlotte.
While leaving an extra point on the table hurts, the fighting spirit, tactical adaptability, and offensive explosiveness from the young 5-Stripes showed exactly why the future of Atlanta soccer is incredibly bright.
