We are constantly keeping our eyes on the incredible talent radiating across our regional borders, and right now, the action in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) is absolutely sizzling. Our neighbors just up the road, Chattanooga FC Women, headed to suburban Nashville this past Tuesday night for a high-intensity, deeply physical clash against Tennessee Tempo FC.
It was a gritty, tactical battle that tested the absolute resolve of Head Coach Majo Harispuru’s squad. But thanks to a clutch, late-match header from center-back Claire Palya, Chattanooga dug deep to secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw—a critical road point that officially vaults them to the absolute top of the WPSL Southeast Conference!
A Physical Standoff in Nashville
From the opening whistle, it was clear that neither side was willing to give an inch. The first 45 minutes turned into a grueling tactical chess match, with heavy challenges flying in from both teams. Chattanooga looked dangerous moving the ball through midfielders Kei Yoneda and Linka Ono, but Tempo’s defensive structure held firm, sending both squads into the halftime locker room locked in a scoreless stalemate.
But the match completely cracked open just three minutes into the second half.
Tennessee Tempo FC earned a corner kick and capitalized perfectly on a chaotic bounce in the box, stabbing the ball home to break the deadlock and hand the hosts a 1-1 lead.
Head Coach Harispuru Calls for Patience
Falling behind early in the half on the road is always a nightmare scenario, but Chattanooga didn’t panic. Coach Harispuru immediately adjusted the shape, and CFC began dialing up the offensive intensity. Forward Ximena Jauregui and the rest of the attacking corps began overloading the flanks, piling immense pressure on the Tempo backline.
Despite creating several significant chances, Chattanooga had to remain patient as the clock ticked past the 75th minute.
Finally, in the 80th minute, the breakthrough arrived on a masterclass set piece. Chattanooga earned a free-kick in a dangerous area, and Kei Yoneda stepped up to deliver an absolute dime. Her pinpoint accurate cross floated perfectly toward the back post, where a leaping Claire Palya completely out-jumped her defender, redirecting a powerful header into the far corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
The equalizer silenced the home crowd and sparked a wild celebration on the CFC bench. Chattanooga’s backline, anchored by Palya and Karen Sodeyama, locked things down for the final ten minutes to guarantee the point and secure a massive statement result on the road.
With momentum completely on their side and the top spot in the conference officially theirs, the Chattanooga FC Women are looking like an absolute force to be reckoned with as the summer tournament window heats up.
