What is up, Atlanta and regional soccer family!
While the world’s biggest soccer party is actively roaring right in our downtown backyard at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, our friends down over in Athens are quietly plotting a massive, history-making soccer takeover of their own for later this summer.
Get ready to mark your calendars and pack out the highway, because college soccer in Georgia is about to experience a monumental milestone. The University of Georgia recently announced that for the first time in program history, the UGA Women’s Soccer team will step onto the legendary grass of Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium for their 2026 home regular-season opener against James Madison on Thursday, August 20!
This isn’t just a change of scenery from their usual home at the Turner Soccer Complex. Dubbed “Soccer in Sanford,” fifth-year head coach Keidane McAlpine and the Bulldogs are issuing a massive challenge to sports fans across the state: they are actively aiming to completely smash the national attendance records for both women’s and overall college soccer!
Channels of History: Honoring the Legends of ’96
The choice of venue is a beautiful, full-circle tribute to the roots of the game in our state. This summer officially marks the 30th anniversary of the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. Back on August 1, 1996, Sanford Stadium played host to the iconic Olympic Gold Medal match, where 76,481 screaming fans witnessed the US Women’s National Team defeat China – to claim the gold, setting a permanent international attendance benchmark for women’s sports.
Now, the next generation of Georgia soccer stars is looking to write a fresh chapter of dominance on that very same ground.
Admission to this historic evening will be completely free for all spectators! For families, supporters groups, and casual fans looking to pack the lower bowls, digital ticket claims will officially open on Thursday, July 30.
Tactical Rebuild: Life After Summer
On the pitch, the Bulldogs have plenty of motivation to open their 2026 campaign with a statement win. UGA is coming off a highly competitive 2025 season where they finished third in an incredibly deep SEC before falling to Vanderbilt in the conference tournament and getting knocked out in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Ohio State.
The biggest tactical hurdle for Coach McAlpine this summer will be restructuring the squad’s offensive engine. The Bulldogs will have to navigate life without their undisputed 2025 MVP, MAC Hermann Award semifinalist and United Soccer Coaches All-American Summer Denigan, who finalized a high-profile transfer to perennial powerhouse North Carolina for her senior season.
Even with a massive piece of the puzzle shifting up to Chapel Hill, the chance to step out between the hedges is already generating massive hype across the Georgia soccer landscape. Let’s make sure the 17s show up in full force to prove exactly why our state has grown into the ultimate hotbed for American soccer!
