AMB Sports and Entertainment’s (AMBSE) vice chairman, Steve Cannon, has said he will leave the company at the end of June.

In 2016, Arthur M. Blank, the chairman and owner of the Blank Family of Businesses, chose Cannon to serve as chief executive officer and assist in managing his for-profit sports companies. Since then, Cannon has collaborated closely with Blank and the executives of each company to establish Mercedes-Benz Stadium (MBS) and Atlanta United, grow the PGA TOUR Superstore, advance the business endeavors of the Atlanta Falcons, and advance the organization’s leadership, culture, and community engagement programs. Additionally, he oversaw several game-changing special projects for the organization, the most recent of which being its efforts to support the U.S. The Soccer Federation moved to Atlanta and established the nation’s first national training facility in Fayette County, Georgia.

“I spent the last nine years pinching myself for having the opportunity to serve at the highest level of the National Football League, Major League Soccer, and a world-class venue of Mercedes-Benz Stadium’s caliber,” Cannon said.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, a top-notch sports and entertainment arena, debuted in 2017 under Cannon’s direction. The largest sporting and entertainment events, such as Super Bowl LIII, the College Football Playoff Championship Game, and the world’s biggest entertainment acts, have taken place at MBS, home of the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United. In addition, MBS will host eight World Cup games, including a semifinal, in 2026 and will become the first stadium to host the College Football Playoff Championship Game twice in 2025.

Before the stadium opened, Cannon conducted a unique “Welcome Home” training to give over 4,000 gameday staff members the skills they need to give visitors an exceptional experience and consistently improve the fan experience. Consequently, the Falcons and MBS have ranked first in the NFL overall in 2022 after receiving the highest ratings in the league’s Voice of the Fan poll in a variety of areas, including gameday crew, security, food and beverage, and overall gameday experience.

With an emphasis on sustainability, MBS became the first professional sports stadium in North America to be certified as LEED Platinum by the US Green Building Council and the first stadium globally to be certified as TRUE Platinum for Zero Waste. Additionally, the stadium’s Food and Beverage Experience won the 2018 Sports Business Journal Sports Breakthrough of the Year award for its innovative, reasonably priced, and high-quality metrics.

As Chief Executive Officer, Cannon oversaw the formation of Atlanta United in Major League Soccer in 2017 and continued to do so until 2023. He also served on the MLS Board of Governors. In just its second season, Atlanta United became the first expansion team to win the MLS Cup since 1998. The team has set several league records in terms of overall home attendance, single-season average, and season ticket sales.
