What is up, Atlanta soccer family!
If you weren’t out at the Turner Soccer Complex in Athens this past weekend, you missed what is instantly being labeled an all-time MLS NEXT Pro classic. Our next generation of the 5-Stripes went through an absolute cyclone of emotions on Saturday night, turning a nightmare 3-0 deficit into a roaring 4-3 lead, only to have our hearts broken with the absolute literal last kick of regulation before falling 6-5 in a high-stakes penalty shootout.
It was a match of breathtaking statistical anomalies, incredible resilience, and the cruel, beautiful reality of the game we love.
First Half Falter to Unbelievable Resurgence
The opening 50 minutes were tough to watch for the local faithful. Chattanooga FC showed exactly why they picked up national Team of the Matchweek honors, jumping out to a commanding 3-0 lead. Alex Krehl struck twice with a brilliant first-half brace, pulling level with our own Arif Kovac for the league lead at 9 goals on the year, followed by a Tate Robertson dagger right after the half.
But if you thought the 2s were going to pack it in, you don’t know the fighting spirit brewing in this academy. Driven by tactical shifts from Jose Silva, Atlanta completely flipped the script and dominated the stat sheet, pinning the visitors back with an aggressive press.
The comeback sparked to life in the 57th minute when an intense press forced Chattanooga’s Mattias Hanchard into an own goal. Eleven minutes later, Enzo Dovlo’s dangerous run pressured Farid Sar-Sar into another desperate goal-line error for a second own goal.
Then, the homegrown magic completely took over. In the 71st minute, Andrew Jardines pounced on a loose rebound to fire home his first professional goal, leveling the score at 3-3. Just eight minutes later, captain Matthew Senanou controlled a long throw from Dominik Chong Qui and unleashed a lethal right-footed rocket into the net for his first pro goal, completing an unbelievable 4-goal unanswered avalanche!
Cruel Stoppage Drama and the Shootout
Atlanta peppered the Chattanooga goal looking to seal the full three points, but soccer can be an unforgiving sport. In the 95th minute of stoppage time, a chaotic aerial duel in our box fell perfectly to halftime substitute Yuval Cohen, who volleyed home an equalizer with the final kick of regulation to end it 4-4.
The match moved straight to the spot-kick lottery for the extra standings point. Both teams were utterly clinical, converting each of their first five penalties. But in sudden death, Chattanooga’s veteran keeper Eldin Jakupović came up with a massive stop on Ilan Ettinger’s attempt, allowing Anthony Sorenson to step up and slide home the winner to take the shootout 6-5 for the visitors.
It stings to lose the extra point after a historic comeback effort—especially since it allowed Chattanooga to leapfrog our boys by a single point in the Eastern Conference standings—but the sheer heart, grit, and attacking fireworks displayed by this squad proves that the future of the 5-Stripes is blindingly bright.
