Bartosz Slisz, a midfielder with Atlanta United, made history by being the first Atlanta United player to compete in the UEFA European Championship. Slisz entered the game as a substitute for Poland in the 55th minute in a 1-1 match against the Netherlands at Hamburg, Germany’s Volksparkstadion.
In a fiercely contested game, the 25-year-old came on to replace Taras Romandczuk and gave Poland back possession in the midfield. But Wout Weghorst’s goal in the 83rd minute would give the Netherlands a 2-1 victory.
Thanks to a goal by former New England Revolution striker Adam Buksa in the 16th minute, Poland was up. After a deflection, Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo leveled the score thirteen minutes later. With 10 caps for his nation, Slisz became a Polish international in 2021 after making his debut against San Marino in a World Cup qualifying match.
Group D matches for Slisz and Poland are scheduled for Friday, June 21, against Austria, and Tuesday, June 25, against France. Slisz left Legia Warsaw, the top division in Poland, to sign a four-year contract with Atlanta United in January 2024.
