ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Injury problems continue to hit the Atlanta United roster. United star defender Ronald Hernández will miss approximately 3 to 4 months after sustaining an injury to his right MCL during the club’s 2-1 loss against Columbus Crew SC on Saturday.

With his injury, Hernández will also miss the chance to join the Venezuelan national team for the current FIFA international window. United (4-5-4, 16 points) will miss the services of Hernandez as they return to action Tuesday, June 14, when it hosts CF Pachuca in the American Family Insurance Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (7:30 p.m., Bally Sports South, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor). The team also returns to MLS play Sunday, June 19, when it hosts Inter Miami CF at Mercedes-Benz Stadium (3 p.m., ESPN2, ESPN Deportes, Sports Radio 92-9 The Game, La Mejor).

Earlier, as a reward for playing well for the United last year, Club Vice President Carlos Bocanegra said the team had signed Aberdeen FC fullback Ronald Hernandez to a three-year deal that will make him available for the team until 2024. “Ronald is a talented and versatile defender who we’re pleased to add permanently to our roster,” Bocanegra said. “After coming in last season on loan, he was able to re-integrate himself into the Venezuela National Team after playing valuable minutes for our club.

We look forward to Ronald continuing to add competition for playing time in our team,” Bocanegra added. The Barinas, Venezuela native, joined United FC on loan before the 2021 season. He finished the campaign with 13 matches played, including eight starts. He scored his first career MLS goal on July 21 at Cincinnati to secure a 1-1 draw. Hernández played a total of 634 minutes last season for Atlanta. Hernandez had a successful year for the team in the MLS 2021 season. He was slow to get much playing time under Gabriel Heinze, who elected to use other players, but immediately started under interim Rob Valentino and continued to impress under Gonzalo Pineda.
