In the previous generations, society was still misogynistic and upholding a patriarchal type of worldview. One example is how women were not allowed to vote. Women also weren’t encouraged to partake in sports. Eventually, times changed.
Such an occurrence could be seen in American women’s soccer. The US women’s national soccer team has dominated the soccer world and has gained a huge following with both women and men. They have achieved a lot more than their male counterparts have in soccer winning multiple World Cups. Legends have been made in women’s soccer- Mia Hamm, Megan Rapinoe, Abby Wambach, Michelle Akers, Alex Morgan, Hope Solo, and many more. These players have inspired many young girls in the U.S. and around the world.
In Atlanta, it is no different when it comes to talent in women’s soccer. Soccer teams like the Atlanta Beat and Atlanta Silverbacks Women showcase strong talent in the professional soccer scene. The Atlanta Silverbacks Women’s team was active until four years ago, winning the W-League championship in 2011 and WPSL Southeast championship in 2016 .
The women’s soccer scene in Atlanta is growing and will continue to grow. Groups like Atlanta Women’s Soccer, have events that promote women’s soccer in the community and Greater Atlanta Women’s Soccer Association (GAWSA) also showcases the best local female talent.
