To Thiago Almada’s outstanding CV, add the Transfermarkt MLS Player of the Season award.

Following his first media appearance of the year on Thursday at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground, the 2023 MLS Young Player of the Year and World Cup winner was presented with the award. The community at Transfermarkt, a global platform dedicated to football, awarded him the prize as a show of appreciation.

Almada competed for the Argentina U-23 men’s national team in the CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic competition throughout the majority of the club’s preseason. Argentina defeated Brazil, the reigning gold medalists, 1-0 in Venezuela to secure qualifying. Argentina’s ticket to the 2024 Olympic Games was guaranteed by the outcome, which eliminated Brazil.

“It was very important for me,” Almada said. “The most important thing was to help the group to qualify for the Olympics, but for me, it’s always important to help the national team.”

The midfielder demonstrated on the field during the pre-Olympic competition why the Olympics are a huge event for Argentina. Almada scored five goals to lead the competition, including a brace and an assist in the January 31 encounter against Chile.

The week before the team played its first game of the 2024 regular season, Almada made her way back to Atlanta. Almada seemed assured about fitting in with the group despite missing the entire 12-day journey to Florida and all five of the team’s preseason friendlies.

Almada reported that, despite not having had much of an offseason, he feels well physically. The midfield player claimed to be “motivated” mentally.

In Atlanta’s opening game on February 24, Almada, a nominee for the MLS MVP award the previous season, started and completed the full 90 minutes of play. The schedule put Atlanta up against a formidable opponent to start 2024: the defending MLS Cup champion Columbus Crew at Lower.com Field. Even though Atlanta lost their opening game, a hard 1-0 struggle, Almada and the club took a lot of lessons from the outcome.

This week is Atlanta United’s extremely early season bye. They host the New England Revolution on March 9 in their next game as part of the Eastern Conference. Atlanta United is playing its first home game of the year and its first competitive game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium since defeating Columbus Crew 4–2 in Game 2 of the Round One Best–of–3 Series of the MLS Cup Playoffs in November.

It gives us more motivation, Almada remarked. “We can’t wait to play that first home game with our supporters.”

In 2024, Almada will have more opportunities to play for his nation here at home. As Argentina will begin the Copa America competition on June 20, Almada may play with La Albiceleste, the reigning World Cup champions, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
