After what seemed like a great start under Stephen Glass, Atlanta United’s performance against Orlando City SC in August 2020 exposed the team’s weaknesses and showed that there are still significant improvements needed to get them back on track. Aside from missing the obvious, Josef Martinez and Fernando Meza, Atlanta United needed to improve significantly if they wanted to beat Inter Miami in their following match.
Let’s take a look back at how the Five Stripes lined up.
In their defeat to Orlando, the Five Stripes utilized the same formation in their victory against Nashville SC. Glass did not make any changes with the formation. He wanted to apply and keep that philosophy and style of play. Regardless of victory or defeat, Glass made use of the 3-man backline that Atlanta United had been accustomed to, only tweaking the players.
CHANGE OF PERSONNEL
Atlanta United was clearly struggling with the loss of some key players, but even in their defeat, new acquisition Cubo Torres made fair use of the limited minutes he got as a substitute. Partnered alongside Barco in the midfield, the duo proved to be promising in the attack and dangerous in creating chances, which showed how Atlanta United was able to grab a goal late in the game. Glass also tried to create the best possible lineup, with new signee Jurgen Damm playing a significant role, making it clear that Glass was experimenting with the newer players.
A MORE DETERMINED AND FOCUSED TEAM
The previous defeat to Orlando marked Atlanta’s first loss to the Orlando franchise. Fans hoped that loss would energize the team and they would show up ready, determined and focused on revenge. The goals conceded in the last match boiled down to defensive errors rather than Orlando being the better team. While Orlando deserved the victory, the players should be fueled by the disappointing performance because it was their lapse in concentration that contributed to the loss.
Given the team’s injuries and the rusty estart, Glass needs a bit of time to discover the perfect players and combination needed to win. However, the game of soccer is about results, and the Five Stripes are not getting those. Glass needs all of the players to step it up and find the inner strength and drive to make it happen.
