The athletic department at Toombs County High School has had an incredible year. The boys basketball team participated in a state championship game for the first time in program history just two months ago.

The boys’ soccer team is currently on their way to Macon. With a 3-1 victory over Fellowship Christian on Friday, the Bulldogs punched their ticket to the GHSA AA state final. They will now play the Model Blue Devils in the state championship, the program’s first-ever state tournament berth.

Junior midfielder Axcel Barbosa stated, “I’ve been working for the past three years. It was a dream come true to be here in this position.”

With an outstanding 19-3 overall record going into the championship game, Toombs County is prepared to cap off an incredible season.

“You grow up in soccer in rural south Georgia. It’s kind of like a pipe dream to think You get to go play for a state championship,” Jeremy Moore, the head coach, said.

“Now the way the development of soccer in the rural areas for these kids and the passion they have for has grown and developed it. It would mean the world to these guys myself, my family and the people that support us and the school system to be able to go in that.”

On Wednesday, Toombs County and Model will compete for the championship. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Macon’s Mercer University.
