The Atlanta Silverbacks scored a 2-0 win over division-rival Knoxville Force Saturday afternoon to improve to a 3-2-0 record on the season. For the third time this season, starting GK Thomas Hunter recorded a clean sheet and the backline for Atlanta continued their excellent play. Two of the three veteran defenders were in the starting XI (Abdul Bangura and Ebrima Njie) along with utility man Mohammed Issahaku. The defense core was strengthened by the addition of Kemar Brown, who came on for Martin Cortes in the 79th minute.
The Atlanta attack found its form once again after a weak showing on the road in New Orleans last Saturday and a mid-week friendly with the Peachtree City MOBA. After a few offensive chances, DZ Harmon redirected a Joao Johanning Mora cross past the Knoxville GK in the 40th minute. Keeping the pressure on, the Silverbacks added another before the half. Martin Cortes crossed a ball into the box where forward Avery Shepard buried the chance in the 45th minute.
The win over Knoxville gives the Silverbacks 9 points on the young season, the most of any NPSL Southeast Conferenceteam. They hold a one-point advantage over expansion side Asheville City SC in the Eastern division. Knoxville falls to third in the Eastern division with 5 points and a game in hand on both the ‘Backs and Asheville City.
