ATLANTA, GEORGIA—Looks like the days of Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi as a member of Barcelona FC are set to end in June.
This scenario developed after Barca revealed that Messi will not be playing this weekend’s game against Eibar.
Barca said they allow their superstar to miss the Saturday game since it is a no-bearing match as they only managed one win in their last five games ended their La Liga title hopes.
If by chance Messi, 33 will not renew his contract with Barca in June last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at home to Celta Vigo will have been his last match
for the club.
A non-renewal of the contract will also end the 20-year stay of Messi in the Spanish club.
While the transfer rumor is getting louder, Barca president Joan Laporta is confident Messi will sign a two-year contract extension with the option for an additional year.
Last summer, Messi already asked Barca for a transfer to Manchester City but the club refused to let him go.
Messi decided to part ways with Barca earlier after the team’s 8-2 defeat to Bayern Munich last season.
Aside from the lopsided defeat, Messi also had a misunderstanding with the previous president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, and his running of the club.
This season Messi played 47 games and scored 38 goals.
Messi is currently preparing to join Argentina in the coming weeks for the Copa America, where they kick off their campaign against Chile on June 13 in Buenos Aires.
