ATLANTA, GEORGIA—One of the top young prospects in women’s soccer finally got the chance to play for the U.S. women’s national soccer team (USWNT).
Trinity Rodman, of the top players of Washington Spirit, is part of the 25 players for the team’s first training camp of the year.
Rodman, the 2021 NWSL Rookie of the Year and 2021 U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year, at 19 is still age-eligible for the 2022 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup. She was called up for the Australian friendlies in November but opted out.
The daughter of former NBA player Dennis Rodman, she has nine career U20 international goals in just seven caps and likely would have played in the 2020 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup had it not been canceled due to the pandemic.
In the latest FIFA ranking, USWNT remains the top women’s soccer team in the world today with 2109.09 points.
The second place in the ranking belongs to Sweden with 2079.13.
Rounding up the top five are Germany, France, and the Netherlands respectively.
Last November 30, USWNT’s two-game friendly games with Australia ended with a 1-1 draw.
Playing in front of 20,459 fans at McDonald Jones Stadium, Forward Ashley Hatch scored in just the 4th minute and a strong performance from a young USA squad enabled the USA to finish the trip to Australia with a win and a draw.
The U.S. opened the scoring after a brilliant pass from forward Lynn Williams found teammate Margaret Purce, who ran the ball down near the end line to the right of the goal. She then calmly laid off a pass back toward the heart of the penalty box to meet Hatch’s run for a one-time finish and another early lead.
The goal marked Hatch’s second career tally and second in as many matches. The 2021 NWSL Golden Boot winner scored the third-fastest goal in USWNT history when she notched her first international goal to open the scoring just 24 seconds into the team’s 3-0 victory over the Matildas on Nov. 27 at the Stadium Australia, site of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final in Sydney, Australia.
Aside from Hatch, Rose Lavelle and Lindsey Horan provided the other goals for USWNT in their win.
The USWNT roster features 10 players from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics squad and 12 players with 10 caps or less — including five uncapped players. The average age of the squad is 26.3 years.
