U.S. Soccer Launches BNT Futures Program: Expanding the Development Pathway

In a significant expansion of its youth development pyramid, U.S. Soccer has officially launched the U.S. U-15 and U-16 Boys’ National Team (BNT) Futures program. This new initiative is designed to bridge the gap in the talent identification process by specifically targeting “high-potential” players who may be overlooked due to later physical maturation.

The program kicks off today, February 19, 2026, with a joint training camp at McCurry Park in Fayetteville, Georgia, running through February 24. This location is particularly symbolic as it sits near the future site of the Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center, currently under construction and slated to become the permanent home for all 27 U.S. National Teams.

The Strategic Vision: “The U.S. Way”

The Futures initiative is a core component of The U.S. Way, the federation’s holistic sporting strategy led by Sporting Director Matt Crocker. The goal of this strategy is to align the entire American soccer ecosystem—from grassroots to the senior national teams—around a shared philosophy of excellence.

Focus on Relative Age Effect (RAE)

Historically, youth national teams have often been dominated by “early bloomers”—players born early in the calendar year or those who reach physical maturity sooner. The BNT Futures program aims to mitigate this Relative Age Effect by:

• Inclusive Identification: Providing a separate track for players aged 14 to 16 who possess high technical and tactical ceilings but lack the current physical profile of their peers.
• Increased Contact Time: The program adds three dedicated camps per year for each age group (U-15 and U-16), effectively doubling the scouting and coaching opportunities for these athletes.
• Talent Pool Depth: By capturing “late bloomers,” U.S. Soccer ensures that the talent pool remains deep and diverse as players transition toward the U-17 World Cup cycle and beyond.

“Recognizing that development timelines vary widely… this initiative creates a more inclusive pathway for high-potential players who might be overlooked due to later physical maturation,” said Barry Pauwels, Men’s Youth National Teams Head of Development.

Inaugural 2026 Futures Rosters

The initial rosters, selected by U-16 BNT head coach Paul Simpson and U-15 BNT head coach Ross Brady, reflect a heavy influence from MLS NEXT academies, which continue to serve as the primary engine for domestic talent.

U-16 BNT Futures (2010 Birth Year)

The U-16 roster features 24 players, with New York City FC leading the contingent (3 players). Other major contributors include Charlotte FC, Philadelphia Union, San Jose Earthquakes, and Seattle Sounders.

U-15 BNT Futures (2011 Birth Year)

The U-15 roster is highlighted by a strong showing from FC Dallas (3 players) and representation from 14 different MLS setups.

• Key Player to Watch: Ali Divanovic, a standout defender from FC Cincinnati, is among the 24 players called up for this age group.
• Non-MLS Representation: The roster also features players from elite non-MLS academies such as Pipeline SC, Sporting Athletic SC, and Tampa Bay United.

What This Means for the Future of U.S. Soccer

The launch of the Futures program is a direct response to the federation’s goal of reaching “podium status” at major international tournaments. By identifying players based on their future potential rather than current physical dominance, U.S. Soccer is adopting a model similar to successful European nations like Belgium and Germany.

Next Steps for the Program

1. Spring/Summer Camps: Following this February camp, the U-15 and U-16 Futures will gather again in the late spring and fall.
2. Integration with U-17s: Performance in these camps will serve as a direct pipeline for the 2027 Concacaf U-17 Qualifiers and the subsequent 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.
3. National Training Center Transition: As construction progresses in Fayetteville, these camps will eventually move from McCurry Park to the world-class facilities at the new National Training Center.
