ATLANTA, GEORGIA—The dream of United States Men’s National team soccer (USMNT) to win back-to-back World Cup Qualifying games in January has ended in a nightmare.
On January 30, the visiting USMNT squad fell to Canada 0-2 at Tim Horton Field at Hamilton Canada.
Playing in front of a limited-capacity sellout crowd, Canada took the lead in the seventh minute off a goal by Cyle Larin, and Samuel Adekugbe secured the game with a goal late in second-half stoppage time.
Tonight’s result improves Canada’s position atop Concacaf’s standings to 22 points while the USA remains in second for the time being with 18 points. The top three finishers at the end of the final round advance to Qatar.
The United States will close out the winter World Cup qualifiers with its third game in seven days with USA-Honduras, presented by Volkswagen, on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minn. (7:30 p.m. ET; FS1, Univision, TUDN).
Earlier, a second-half goal from Antonee Robinson carried the team to a 1-0 win against the visiting El Salvador football team at the Lower.com Field at Columbus, Ohio on January 27.
After a scoreless first half, USMNT played better in the second half in front of its 20,000 fans to salvage the much-needed win.
Two members of the Atlanta United FC have made it once again to the USMNT roster.
Brooks Lennon and Miles Robinson have been named to the USMNT roster by manager Gregg Berhalter for three Concacaf World Cup Qualifying matches.
Lennon, 24, recently made his senior team debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Dec. 18, starting the match and playing 62 minutes. He’ll make his World Cup Qualifying debut if he appears in a match during this window. Overall on the U.S. Youth circuit, Lennon earned four caps and scored four goals with the U.S. U-23s, 17 caps and seven goals with the U-20s and nine caps and one goal with the U-18s.
Robinson, 24, has 15 caps and three goals with the USMNT, earning his senior team debut on Sept. 6, 2019, coming on as a substitute in a friendly against Mexico. Robinson started all six matches and scored two goals at the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup where he helped the U.S. secure five clean sheets and scored the game-winning goal in the final as the U.S. beat Mexico 1-0. He started six World Cup Qualifiers in 2021 and was nominated for U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year.
