May 25 is World Soccer Day, a celebration of the global sport that connects millions from different cultures, continents, and communities. From the roar of 70,000 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to the echo of a ball bouncing off a city street curb, soccer continues to be a universal language—one that transcends borders and speaks to the soul.
As Atlanta United joins clubs and supporters around the globe to honor the game, we reflect on the earliest memories:
The first time we saw Pelé defy logic.
The first time we felt the click of the ball on the laces.
The first time the 5-Stripes stepped onto the field at Bobby Dodd Stadium, the tifo raised high.

Connecting People Through Conversation
Carter Nichols, lifelong player and local supporter:
“The biggest thing for me is being able to connect with people from so many different cultures, so many different backgrounds, over something so common as a game. When you meet someone from abroad, one of the first questions I always ask is, ‘Do you watch soccer?’ or ‘What’s your team?’ It’s always a good way to start a conversation, meet new people—it just brings people together.”
Bringing in New Fans Through Their Support
Safiya Said, former collegiate player:
“I’ve been playing soccer since I was seven, but I really fell in love with it during my senior year of high school. I thought I wasn’t going to play anymore—and that’s when I realized I couldn’t walk away. I ended up committing late to play in college. Now, it’s my whole heart. The game brought me closer to my friends and my family.”
Uniting Nations Through Competition

“Haiti introduced me to soccer. The World Cup brings the world together—different countries, different cultures, all watching their players compete on the biggest stage. It’s powerful. It’s pride. And no matter where we’re from, we feel like we’re all part of something bigger.”
