Georgia Southern soccer controlled much of Thursday night’s matchup with Georgia State.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, the scoreboard told a different story.
Georgia State scored twice and held off a furious late Georgia Southern rally to claim a 2-1 Sun Belt Conference victory at Georgia State Soccer Stadium.
The loss moves Georgia Southern to 6-2-2 overall and 1-1 in Sun Belt play, while Georgia State improves to 6-3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
For the Eagles, the result was particularly frustrating given their statistical advantage throughout the match.
Georgia Southern finished with a 22-15 edge in shots and generated 12 corner kicks compared with four for the Panthers.
The Eagles simply couldn’t turn enough of those opportunities into goals.
Georgia Southern Creates Chances Early
The Eagles had opportunities to strike first.
Addison Comer and Anna Braziunas both tested Georgia State goalkeeper Alondra Iriarte with dangerous chances, but Iriarte kept the Panthers level.
Georgia Southern continued to apply pressure, eventually building a significant advantage in shots.
By halftime, the Eagles had outshot Georgia State 16-5.
But Georgia State made its limited opportunities count.
The Panthers’ first-half shot on goal came in the 31st minute, when Himari Sato found the net with a shot from the top of the box.
That goal gave Georgia State a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime despite Georgia Southern controlling the shot count.
It was a reminder of the difference between creating chances and finishing them.
Georgia State Doubles the Lead
The Panthers extended their advantage early in the second half.
In the 51st minute, Aaliyah Faddoul stepped up to take a penalty kick and converted, pushing Georgia State’s lead to 2-0.
Georgia Southern suddenly had a much larger mountain to climb.
The Eagles continued generating opportunities, though, and refused to let the match slip away quietly.
The shot advantage continued to grow, with Georgia Southern ultimately finishing the night with 22 attempts.
The breakthrough finally arrived with less than five minutes remaining.
Conroy Sparks a Late Rally
In the 86th minute, fourth-year midfielder Caitlin Conroy capitalized on a Georgia State turnover and finished the opportunity for her second goal of the season.
Suddenly, Georgia Southern was within one.
The Eagles pushed forward looking for an equalizer, and the final moments produced the closest chance of the night to complete the comeback.
With just 30 seconds remaining, Georgia Southern earned a corner kick.
Braziunas rose for the resulting ball and her header struck the top right corner of the goal frame.
The Eagles had another corner immediately afterward, but Georgia State managed to clear the danger.
The final whistle followed shortly after, leaving Georgia Southern just short of what would have been a dramatic comeback.
The Numbers Tell the Story
The final statistics underline just how much pressure Georgia Southern put on the Panthers.
The Eagles finished with:
- 22 shots to Georgia State’s 15
- 12 corner kicks to Georgia State’s four
- Six saves from Georgia State goalkeeper Iriarte
- Four saves from Georgia Southern goalkeeper Quinn Wilson
Georgia Southern also had more of the attacking opportunities but couldn’t consistently turn them into shots on frame.
Iriarte’s six saves ultimately helped preserve Georgia State’s lead.
For Georgia Southern, the challenge now is turning that attacking production into goals.
A Tough Lesson on the Road
Thursday’s loss is the kind of result that can be especially difficult for a team to absorb.
Georgia Southern created more chances, dominated the corner-kick count and spent significant portions of the match pushing toward the Georgia State goal.
But the Panthers were more efficient when their opportunities arrived.
That efficiency proved decisive.
The Eagles now return home with a chance to respond quickly.
