Atlanta United 2’s push toward the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro playoffs took a hit Sunday afternoon as Chattanooga FC rolled to a 4-1 victory at Finley Stadium.
The result gave Chattanooga FC three important points and guaranteed the Boys in Blue will finish no lower than second place in the Eastern Conference, securing a home playoff match in the 2026 postseason.
For Atlanta United 2, the loss leaves the club sitting at 13-9-5 with 45 points heading into Decision Day.
Chattanooga controlled the scoreboard despite Atlanta holding more of the possession, with the hosts producing a significant advantage in attacking efficiency. CFC finished with 20 shots and 11 shots on goal, compared with Atlanta’s 12 shots and just two on target.
Alex Krehl opened the scoring in the 10th minute before Alex McGrath, Luke Husakiwsky and Damien Barker John added second-half goals.
Arif Kovac eventually pulled one back for Atlanta in the 89th minute, but the striker later missed a stoppage-time penalty as Atlanta’s afternoon ended without a late comeback.
Alex Krehl Strikes Early for Chattanooga
Chattanooga wasted little time putting Atlanta United 2 under pressure.
Alex Krehl scored in the 10th minute, continuing his pursuit of the MLS NEXT Pro Golden Boot.
The goal was Krehl’s 18th of the season, keeping him within one goal of Atlanta’s Arif Kovac, who entered the match with 19.
Atlanta responded with possession and passing control, eventually finishing the match with 56% possession and 390 completed passes.
But controlling the ball did not translate into enough dangerous opportunities.
Atlanta managed only two shots on target throughout the match, while Chattanooga repeatedly tested goalkeeper Jonathan Ransom.
Chattanooga Breaks the Match Open After Halftime
The game remained within reach for Atlanta heading into the second half.
That changed quickly after the break.
Alex McGrath doubled Chattanooga’s lead in the 62nd minute, scoring his sixth goal of the MLS NEXT Pro season.
Just three minutes later, Chattanooga struck again.
Substitute Luke Husakiwsky entered the match and needed only two minutes to make an impact, giving the Boys in Blue a 3-0 advantage in the 65th minute.
Atlanta now faced a three-goal deficit with time running out.
Chattanooga continued to create the better scoring opportunities, ultimately finishing with an expected goals total of 4.24 compared with Atlanta’s 1.85.
Kovac Gets Atlanta on the Board
Atlanta finally found a breakthrough in the 89th minute.
Arif Kovac scored late to give Atlanta a chance at an unlikely comeback while also extending his league-leading goal total to 20.
But Chattanooga quickly shut down any possibility of a dramatic finish.
Damien Barker John had already made it 4-0 in the 86th minute, and Chattanooga’s defense held firm after Kovac’s goal.
Kovac then had an opportunity to add another from the penalty spot in stoppage time, but his attempt sailed over the crossbar.
The final whistle confirmed a 4-1 Chattanooga victory.
Chattanooga Secures Home Playoff Soccer
While Atlanta left Chattanooga empty-handed, the result was a major milestone for the hosts.
The three points guaranteed Chattanooga FC would finish no lower than second in the Eastern Conference, meaning the club will host a conference quarterfinal during the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro playoffs.
Head coach Richard Dixon emphasized what playing in front of the home crowd means for the club.
“To bring a playoff game at home is always big,” Dixon said. “Obviously we wanted to make sure we made the playoffs and had our foot in the door, but to do it at home is huge and the more football we can bring to our fans the better it is for us.”
Chattanooga also set a new club record with 14 wins in a single MLS NEXT Pro season.
Tate Robertson added another milestone, surpassing Juan Hernandez to become Chattanooga’s outright second-most appearance maker with 128 appearances.
What This Means for Atlanta United 2
For Atlanta United 2, the loss makes the final regular-season match even more important.
The club enters Decision Day at 13-9-5 with 45 points, with Orlando City B awaiting next Sunday.
Atlanta has already put together a historic season by reaching the final stage of the regular season with its postseason hopes intact. But the Chattanooga result showed the difference between maintaining possession and turning that possession into dangerous chances.
Atlanta completed passes at an 86.4% accuracy rate and held 56% possession, yet Chattanooga generated nine more shots and nine more shots on target.
The biggest issue was efficiency in the attacking third.
Atlanta will have one more regular-season opportunity to sharpen that side of its game before the postseason.

Atlanta United 2 will close the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro regular season next Sunday, September 20, against Orlando City B at Osceola Heritage Park.
Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
The match will be available on MLSNEXTPro.com and the OneFootball app, with the final regular-season standings determining the postseason picture.
For Atlanta, the objective is clear: finish the regular season with momentum and carry that into what could be the club’s first MLS NEXT Pro playoff appearance.
